Portlaoise Road Bridge

Portlaoise Road Bridge

Work has started on the construction of the foundations for a bridge structure on the M7/M8 road scheme at Portlaoise in County Laois.

Main contractor Ascon Dragados has commissioned FK Lowry Piling to deliver the contract - part of the ongoing road project to upgrade the N7 between Portlaoise and Castletown and the N8 from Portlaoise to Cullahill to motorway standard.

The works will see FK Lowry install a total of 68no. 600mm diameter rotary bored piles, vibrating up to 16m long in temporary casings along with a number of 1.25m rock sockets. In addition, static load testing will be carried out to check the integrity of the piles, using mini piles as reaction anchors.

The piles will be installed using a Soilmec R625 piling rig in rotary mode, working with a handling crane for assistance with the casings and tremie pipes for concreting operations.

Works due to complete October 2008.
