Innovations in Concrete

FK Lowry Piling is close to attaining CE Marking registration for its innovative range of precast concrete piling products manufactured for the Irish market.

The company will be the only pile manufacturer in Ireland – and only the second in the UK - to have achieved CE Marking.

All control systems have been carefully examined and are currently being implemented to conform to BS EN 12794 – the standard for pile manufacture - in preparation for the audit.

Continuous research at FKL’s casting yard in partnership with Roadmix has resulted in the development of a selfcompacting GGBS/OPC blended mix design that creates early strength gains for precast products. This new mix dispenses with the need for expensive Sulphate Resisting Cement, benefiting clients and enabling the business to reduce its carbon footprint.

FKL has also conducted a series of trials to investigate the use of various selfcompacting mixes in its concrete products and this has produced significant savings in labour and energy costs whilst increasing productivity and the supply of quality products to the market.

New casting techniques have been developed to improve compliance with strict quality control tolerances.

Innovations to the casting arrangement have also been implemented to ensure the margin of tolerance for the pile joints are all constantly within the specifications of BS EN 12794.
