Second Phase of Piling at Newhaven - 5/19/2009

Dew Piling has recently revisited Newhaven to carry out the next phase of sheet piling at a new waste to energy facility sited on the bank of the Ouse Estuary, having completed the precast concrete piling last year. Working for Hochtief, Dew Piling was contracted to install a temporary sheet piled cofferdam to the ‘dry dock’ structure in unstable ground conditions.

The construction required a deep basement structure to be constructed in a temporary location, and floated within a flooded sheet piled cofferdam into its permanent position. The structure was immersed to 18m depth within a permanent diaphragm wall circular cofferdam. The diaphragm wall structure was constructed to a depth of 32m. The basement was immersed in phases allowing calculated wall lifts to be constructed during immersion.

The sheet piles were welded and installed in pairs. The pile length was 14.5m and, prior to installation, Biguma clutch sealant was applied to leading clutches mitigating water leakage during flooding. Hochtief also applied a further sealant and bitumen backed tape to internal clutches prior to flooding.

The temporary sheet piles will be extracted after the float-out is complete.
