Dew Piling Ltd is currently working as a specialist subcontractor for main contractor Galliford Try on a project to build an apartment block adjacent to the new London Olympic site. The piling will allow the provision of a basement car park under the apartments.

On a contract worth £450,000, Dew Piling provided the design for the piling works and has installed permanent sheet piles to support the existing roads and houses. The installation of sheet pile walls for the underground car park is well under way and should complete on schedule by the end of January.

Due to the close proximity of existing properties, vibration levels are being closely monitored. The company’s 2 Tosa silent pile-presses are coming into their own as they are specifically designed for these situations, since they minimise vibration and noise and hence avoid disturbance.

The site has dense gravels overlying stiff clays, so the ground was pre-augered with a 12/15 ABI leader rig to allow the installation of the 416 no. 9m to 11m 3w sheet piles by the TOSAs. The TOSAs are combined with high pressure water jets as an aid to pile driving in the dense gravels. In order to help create the watertight seal required for the basement, the toe of each pile has to reach the underlying clay. Once the basement piling is complete, Dew Piling will then clutch weld the basement piles for waterproofing and install a puddle flange.

Keen to stay on schedule, the piling crews endured heavy snow to carry on working. The exceptionally low temperatures (down to -10 at night) meant that the equipment had to be continually treated with various anti-freezing methods to avoid any frost damage and associated delay.
